On January 15th, 1919, Boston was struck by a disaster unlike any other. A massive tank filled with syrup burst open in the city's North End, unleashing a wave of sticky sweetness that raged through the streets like a tsunami. The flood, soaring to 25 feet in some areas, was catastrophic. Homes and businesses crumbled under the power of the sticky goo.
The aftermath was heartbreaking. Twenty-one people lost their lives, and many more here were injured. The flood also caused a great deal of destruction to property, leaving a trail of molasses carnage in its wake.
